Emily and Brian went to the hospital at 2AM on May 11th after the contractions were about 5 minutes apart and the doctor said GO to the HOSPITAL. Emily was already 5 cm dilated and 100% effaced. They were admitted by 3 AM to Labor and Delivery at Akron City Hospital.
The contractions became inconsistent for awhile and Dr. Cousineau came in around 9 AM and said that she would break Emily's water that afternoon if the contractions did not persist. At 1:30, Dr. C casually broke Emily's water (as Brian watched:). Around 3 PM the contractions started to become intense and closer together. Emily walked around and sat on the birthing ball to get through the contractions (as Brian experienced horrible nervous gas- making Em's contractions really fun). By 5:30, Emily was only 7 cm dilated and refused the epidural. The contractions became worse... and by 6 PM Emily moved to the bed. For the last hour she slept through each break between contractions (1 minute naps)!
Labor started around 715 with pushing between each contraction. The night nurse and Brian did a nice job of coaching along with Dr. C and the resident doctor that admitted them earlier that morning. A bit messy at times, but Matilda finally came out at 7:54. Dr. C said "look at those cheeks!"
Grammy Rodgers, Grandpa Rodgers, Grandpa Gifford, Aunt Elz, Uncle Timmy and Aunt Stephanie were in the waiting room when Brian walked out to tell them the great news! A healthy little girl was born!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hospital. Taking advantage of the extra nursing help AND the room service!
Thanks to EVERYONE that has supported us throughout the pregnancy and birth! We had many visitors at the hospital and continue to welcome visitors to meet our beautiful little gal at home.
